چکیده

We present the results of an experimental investigation of the striking flow structures that may arise when a vertical jet of fluid impinges on a thin fluid layer overlying a horizontal boundary. Ellegaard et al. (Nature, vol. 392, 1998, p. 767; Nonlinearity, vol. 12, 1999, p. 1) demonstrated that the axial symmetry of the circular hydraulic jump may be broken, resulting in steady polygonal jumps. In addition to these polygonal forms, our experiments reveal a new class of steady asymmetric jump forms that include structures resembling cat’s eyes, threeand four-leaf clovers, bowties and butterflies. An extensive parameter study reveals the dependence of the jump structure on the governing dimensionless groups. The symmetry-breaking responsible for the asymmetric jumps is interpreted as resulting from a capillary instability of the circular jump. For all steady non-axisymmetric forms observed, the wavelength of instability of the jump is related to the surface tension, σ , fluid density ρ and speed Uv of the radial outflow at the jump through λ=(74± 7)σ/(ρU 2 v ).

Experimental Investigation of the Characteristics of Hydraulic Jump in a Diverging Stilling Basin with an Adverse Slope Using Baffle Blocks

Stilling basins have been used as an energy dissipater downstream of hydraulic structures. Dimensions of the stilling basins depends on hydraulic jump characteristics. In this research diverging hydraulic jump with an adverse slope using baffle blocks and an end sill have been studied experimentally and effect of diverging angle of the walls, adverse bed slope and baffle blocks on the hydraulic...

Theoretical Criterion for Stability of Free Hydraulic Jump on Adverse Stilling Basins

Hydraulic jump on adverse stilling basin is an unstable phenomenon which causes some complexities in controlling of the   jump. This paper considers the stability of free hydraulic jump on adverse stilling basins from a theoretical point of view. A minimum value of upstream Froude number is needed to produce the free hydraulic jump on adverse stilling basins which was presented by a theoretical...

The influence of surface tension on the circular hydraulic jump

We present the results of a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the influence of surface tension σ on the laminar circular hydraulic jump. An expression is deduced for the magnitude of the radial curvature force per unit length along a circular jump, Fc =−σ (s − R)/Rj , where Rj is the jump radius, and s and R are, respectively, the arclength along the jump surface and radial...

Hydraulic Jump over Negative Slopes with Negative Steps

Many studies have been conducted on the characteristics of hydraulic jumps over horizontal basins. On sloping basins, however, few such studies have been performed so that the issue requires more investigation. A significant number of studies has also been conducted on basins with positive slopes but comparatively few have been carried out on basins with negative slopes. This study was carried ...
